Revisiting China in 20 pictures.

When do we go back?

Two years ago on my way back from Australia, like a lot of European backpackers, I traveled around Asia for a couple of weeks.

The first stop was China for 12 days, time for us to visit four cities. First, we landed in Beijing where we spent 4 days. It was the third Asian country I had been to, after Singapour and Vietnam. From Beijing to Shanghai, we stopped by Xi’An and Suzhou.

First day, first hour in China, Beijing…

The Forbidden city. A World Heritage site by Unesco since 1987. It was built as the palace of the Ming emperors of China, sixteen emperors ruled over the whole of China for 276 years, from 1368 to 1644…

To complete the visit of Beijing, we could not miss it, the Great Wall. It was worth the hike! Here is the Mutianyu section…

Hop on hop off Xi’an! One of the oldest cities in China, Xi’an is the starting point of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Xi’an is the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals, having held the position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history…

Street food in Xi’An… Rice cake with peanuts.

After the day at the China’s greatest archaeological treasures—the Terracotta Warriors we traveled to the third city of our trip in China and discovered, the ‘Venice of the East’. With 2,500 years of history, Suzhou. The city is known for its canals, stone bridges, pagodas and the Classical Gardens had been twice added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1997 and 2000…

Fast, diverse, luxurious, vibrant… Welcome to Shanghai!

The fifth largest city in the world with a population estimated to be 24.15 million in 2016. China’s most Westernized city.
